One of the most common issues customers want to talk to us about is “Backup Internet”. Either via fortune of foresight or the misfortune of hindsight, these customers have identified that using a single Internet provider is one of the most significant risks to the cloud strategy.
While I welcome this conversation, it always makes me cringe a little bit. This may make me sound like a bit of a cheapskate, but I hate the idea of paying for something you never hope to use. Yes, I know that’s what I do when I pay for my insurance, but that doesn’t mean I like paying for insurance.
When building your network to leverage the cloud, don’t waste your time and money with “backup Internet”. While I love the fact that you’ve realized that using a single Internet connection, regardless of how reliable it’s been, its not reliable enough for “your cloud”. I hate the fact that you are willing to waste money each month on an Internet connection you hope to never use. There are much better ways to spend your money. Buying backup Internet is a waste.
Failover just doesn’t cut it in today’s business. We are all expected to move faster, be bolder, and achieve more. We need to get the most out of every resource we have to do this. Unused connections and wasted money will not get us any closer to our goals.
