Meet our Leadership Team

Joel Mulkey

Founder & CEO
Joel has over 10 years of executive leadership experience in designing and managing telecommunications systems. Prior to Bigleaf, Joel served as the CIO and Network Architect for Freewire Broadband, where he designed and managed the building and scaling of a custom RF network platform from concept to 500+ locations. He also created, staffed and led a 24/7 Network Operation Center, managed R&D, and oversaw relevant core network upgrades. Outside of Freewire, Joel also designed, prototyped and successfully patented a wireless data monitoring system for the firefighting industry. Joel has a track record of building teams, systems and personal skills to turn overwhelming challenges into successes.

Jeff Burchett

Co-Founder & Chief Revenue Officer
Jeff has over 15 years of sales and leadership experience in the telecommunications industry. Prior to Bigleaf, Jeff served as the Director of Sales for Freewire Broadband, a fixed wireless provider in the northwest, where he built both an inside and outside direct sales team. Jeff also served as the Interim President of Freewire during a leadership transition in 2012. Prior to Freewire, Jeff had a successful sales career at Qwest Communications, serving in multiple sales and marketing capacities. Jeff is also an experienced entrepreneur, successfully launching a DVD kiosk startup in 2012. In his free time, Jeff enjoys family, sports, and cooking.

Luke Heberling

Co-Founder & VP of Software Engineering
As Bigleaf's co-founder, Luke is the architect and author of our core circuit monitoring technology. He brings 20 years of experience in software engineering and management, including ISPs, a senior role at Google and 6 years based in Europe. He's passionate about sustainable management, planet-scale distributed software and the Unix philosophy. Outside of the office he is active in sports and travel, having completed marathons on four continents and visited over 100 countries.

Caroline Carr

CFO
Caroline has a strong passion for working with and supporting fast growing companies through her expertise and leadership in finance and accounting operations. Prior to joining Bigleaf, she was the head of finance at Cloudability, a Portland-based cloud cost management software company, where she provided financial and strategic insights and built scalable finance systems and processes that kept pace with their growth. Caroline also held various leadership positions at companies like Axiom EPM Software, NIKE, Inc, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Her range of experience includes financial planning and analysis, performance management, technical accounting, accounting systems and processes, internal controls, SEC compliance and financial reporting. Caroline is an active Certified Public Accountant in Oregon and holds a Master Degree in Accounting from the University of Oregon, Charles H. Lundquist College of Business. Outside of the office, Caroline enjoys practicing yoga and spending time with her family and friends.

Shawn Sands

SVP of Sales
Shawn Sands brings multiple decades of sales leadership experience to the team, with specific experience scaling other companies of our size. He’s held leadership positions at local leaders such as Tripwire and iovation, and more recently, with companies headquartered outside of Oregon such as Tenable and Corelight.

Eric Brooker

VP of Agent Partner Channel
Based in Minnesota, Eric Brooker represents the technology industry with passion and excitement. Eric is a sales leader with a tremendous track record of success and is a well respected expert in the technology industry. Specifically, the last 10+ years of Eric's career have been in channel-related sales leadership positions.

Susan Fierro

VP of People
As VP of People, Susan is devoted to creating an environment where Bigleaf team members can thrive. She focuses on finding the perfect combination of structure and practicality to attract and retain the most talented employees. Susan has 10+ years of both tactical and strategic Human Resources. Her career started with ADP, where she was helping cook up the product that many HR professionals use today. After 8 years, she was given the opportunity to work for a client and see the other side of the HR world. She continued on to help several different companies with high growth environments whip up their talent management from scratch. Since 2005, Susan has been drawn towards small-to-mid-size entrepreneurial companies, where you know everyone’s name and have personal interactions with everyone on a daily basis. She believes in making all employees feel like they are not just part of a company, they are part of a team.

John Hogan

VP of Business Development
John is a graduate of the University of California at Davis, and earned his J.D. at Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College. Over the past 20 years, he has held a variety of leadership positions in the indirect channel. John started his career in telecommunications with a 10-year stay at U S West/Qwest Communications, where he spent the majority of his time running the Pacific Region of their Channel Partner program. From there, John spent some time heading Business Development for a local tech start-up and a facilities-based data services aggregator, before joining Comcast as one of the founding leaders of its new Channel Program in 2010. John served as the West Division Director for Comcast’s Program for 3 years, then held the same position for tw telecom/Level 3 for a couple years before joining Bigleaf.

Aaron Kaffen

VP of Marketing
Aaron brings to Bigleaf more than 15 years of experience in both strategic and analytical marketing across a variety of software categories. Prior to Bigleaf, Aaron established and scaled the marketing team at Cloudability as the company grew from 6 to 115 employees. Aaron rode the wave of early web technologies in the late 90s and has had a passion for marketing ever since. He studied Marketing, Psychology and Human/Computer Interaction at Miami University where his thesis was among the first to explore the potential for human interaction online.

Jonathon Petkevich

VP of Product Management
Jonathan brings over 10 years of experience in network monitoring and management technology, serving in both the product management and project management capacities. It is over those years that he has developed a passion for walking products through the conceptualization, development, and launching phases. He’s a true customer advocate and is passionate about reinforcing the customer voice when developing new solutions. When he is not at work, he is usually out exploring State and National parks in his Jeep with his family or cheering on his favorite hockey team.

Jim Wilson

VP of Service Delivery & Operations
Jim brings over 25 years of network, technology and operations leadership experience at various companies like New Edge Networks, Earth Class Mail and Varehouse. He has been part of several high-growth technology and SaaS startups. In his role, Jim will help Bigleaf scale the service delivery and operational departments and the associated processes and systems to help guide Bigleaf through our next phase of growth.

Andrew Bagnato

Sr. Director, MSP Partner Program
Andrew is a veteran partner and channel leader, spending the past 8 years leading MSP strategy at threat intelligence and security leader Webroot. He first got into this industry absolutely fascinated by the technology. Twenty years later, Andrew values building strong, mutual partnerships with MSP partners to deliver differentiated technology solutions.

Mike McCullough

Director of Customer Success
Mike brings over 15 years of experience across a wide range of internet technology companies, from business analytics at a 10k+ person search platform, to ad-operations at video and mobile startups, to launching and scaling Customer Success teams at hardware and SaaS organizations. Through a few successful startup exits, and more than a few failures, Mike has proven to be an advocate and ally while building cross functional teams that champion the voice of the customer. When not working he can sometimes be found riding his bike or reading, but more often than not chasing around his special need cats.

Christina Tate

Director of Finance
Christina has over a decade of accounting leadership experience with a proven track record of building capable and effective teams. As Bigleaf’s director of finance, Christina is passionate about improving operating efficiency, while leveraging data to drive reporting and analytics that optimize business decisions. She began her career in Big 4 public accounting at KPMG and sharpened her operational and technical accounting skills in leadership roles at Lithia Motors, Tripwire, and Cloudability. A proud Oregon native and Oregon State University alumnus, outside of work she enjoys hiking and exploring the Pacific NW with her husband and two goldendoodles.

Sarah Demary

Accounting Manager
Sarah has over a decade of experience in accounting in the high-tech industry. Prior to Bigleaf, she worked for other fast-growing software and technology companies, where she helped the businesses to streamline processes and scale for growth. Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting and master’s in financial analysis from Portland State University, and became a licensed CPA in 2018. Sarah is an Oregon native and lives in Portland with her teenage twins. Outside of work, she enjoys destination boating and running relays like Hood to Coast and Ragnar Northwest Passage.
